Featuring vocalist/bassist Ignatios Stamatonikolos, guitarist George Papastamoulos, and guest drummer Vasilis Nanos, SYPSIS eschews the "standard" style of composing songs and doesn't rely on musical boundaries.
Formed in 2012, SYPSIS released a three-track EP, Hypnosis, in 2014, followed by its independently released debut full-length album, Playground of the Dead, in 2015.
On the band's sophomore full-length album, Annihilated Existence, the seven intricate tracks are layered with multi-rhythm sections combined with aggressive thrash metal elements. Even progressive polyrhythms and jazz-fusion-esque elements appear sporadically.
Lyrically, SYPSIS touches on historical themes from ancient Greece (Hades), political and social commentary (Under Siege, Mortals Torment), new world order (Point of Emptiness), everyday struggles (Poverty to Destructive Forms), and
fantasy (USS Eldridger).
Ignatios Stamatonikolos on the writing and recording process for Annihilated Existence: "My main goal was to make music that fulfilled my needs first of all as a listener and as a fan of thrash metal. As for the songs… I love them all. They are like my kids in terms of their artistic approach. I believe that every song is so killer that each one could be included as a promotional lyric video. The album was produced by the band (Giorgos Papastamoulos and me). The bass, vocals, and guitars were recorded in our home studios, and I invited an excellent drummer (Vasilis Nanos) to participate in the album. All drums were recorded at Symbolic Π studios in Athens. The mixing and mastering took place at the same studios as those of Costas Naberius Papadopoulos. We selected this studio because we wanted a more natural sound, more organic, but also with a little modern approach."
